Is Your WordPress Site Protected

WordPress Security Tips 2013

Well, unless you have been living under a rock over the last month or so, we will all know about the recent WordPress hacking issues. Due to this we have decided to run a few posts on Tips and tricks of how to help protect your wordpress sites and accounts.

Web Design iconUse Strong Passwords for all Entry Points

I was surprised to find out how many of my friends use the WordPress admin password generated by WordPress during install time and thinks that their blog is protected from attacks as they are using a strong password! The WordPress admin password generated during install time is normally pretty strong (consists lowercase and uppercase letters with numbers and symbols) so there is nothing wrong with that. I was mainly shocked to find out that their ftp/cPanel password for that domain is not that strong. It gets even better… one of them were using his partners name as the password (Did I mention that his partner’s name was mentioned on his blog’s ‘About’ page?)! The ftp/cPanel password for your domain is equally important. If someone can access your cPanel then that person can delete your WordPress database from the cPanel->Databases->MySQL Databases. Anyway, the bottom line is to use strong passwords for all entry points not just one.

Web Design iconProtect the ‘wp-admin’ Directory

Use a .htaccess file in the ‘wp-admin’ directory to limit access to only certain IP addresses (your home, work etc). The WordPress htaccess tips post has more htaccess related tips and tricks. Below is an example .htaccess file that can be used for this purpose (replace ‘x’ and ‘y’ with your IP address)

AuthUserFile /dev/null
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName “Access Control”
AuthType Basic
order deny,allow
deny from all
# whitelist home IP address
allow from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
# whitelist work IP address
allow from yy.yyy.yyy.yyy

If you don’t have static IP addresses then the above method can be a bit hard to implement. In that case I would recommend the use of AskApache Password Protect WordPress plugin. The ‘AskApache Password Protect’ plugin adds some serious password protection to your WordPress Blog. Not only does it protect your ‘wp-admin’ directory, but also your wp-includes, wp-content, plugins, etc. Use the Login Lockdown Plugin to protect your blog against brute force attack (a brute force attack is a method of defeating a cryptographic scheme by systematically trying a large number of possibilities)

Web Design iconDeny access to your Plugins and other directories

A lot of bloggers don’t protect access to their WordPress plugins directory. What I mean by this is that if you go to the www.your-domain.com/wp-content/plugins/ from a browser it shows all the plugins that you are using. Many wordpress plugins can have vulnerabilities which the attacker can use to harm your blog. So, its a good idea to block access to these directories. You can use a .htaccess file or just upload a blank ‘index.html’ file to that directory to block access to these directories. (download a blank index.html)

Web Design iconUpdate WordPress to the Latest Release

As new WrodPress versions are released the security bugs for previous release becomes public information. WordPress could have vulnerabilities as a result of how the program is written that allow an attacker to pass HTTP arguments, bad URI strings, form input, etc, that could cause Bad Things to happen. So always upate your WordPress to the latest version to make sure that you are protected against any known security bugs.

Web Design iconDon’t Show WordPress Version on Your Blog

You should not make the WordPress version that you are using visible to others for the same reason explained above. The specific WordPress version that you are using can give the attacker an upper hand in finding a way to break in.

Web Design iconBackup Your Data

I can’t stress this enough… always keep backups of all the important files. I always backup my WordPress Database and WordPress files in case of emergency. Read my what would you do if you lost all your blog’s content article to find out how backups can help you sleep better at night

Web Design iconBe careful when you upload something to your site

When you upload a script (example: a plugin, a theme or just a normal script) to your site you need to be extra careful as it can harm your site if it was designed to do so. Only upload authentic content to your site. Never download a plugin or a theme from a warez or torrent or file sharing sites. The content on these sites can be disguised as a plugin or a theme but it will harm your site when uploaded to your server. You can read more on these types of attack from the free premium plugin and theme downloaders beware article.

Wordpress Tips and Tricks

Well, we have all been there, working away on our posts and perhaps even layout functions and thought “If Only I Could Get It To XYZ”. I for one can confirm that this is happening to me frequently. As I am from a raw coding background, the concept allowing a platform to do all the work for me, just is not normal to be honest and the transition has been a major learning curve. However, as we know we see the issues, we know that there must be so many more of you that also see them and simply wonder “now how do you do that”. So we have complied just a few quick tips to help you hopefully find some shortcuts to making your WordPress blog for you.

Wordpres Bullet PointPlan Ahead and Schedule Blog Posts for the Future
This has to be perhaps one of the most popular functions within WordPress. When creating your blog content, you want to be able to work ahead of the schedule, as blogger or site content writers, we like to product our posts ahead of time. Most of you will even have your diary in this manner. You may only post once a month, once a week or on a daily basis. WordPress knows that we all like to work ahead of time and plan what is being posted and when. By using the scheduling function, you can schedule posts to go live at a particular time of day or night, you won’t need to be at your computer (or even awake) when the post goes live. Check out below:

In the WordPress Posts Dashboard, go to the Edit screen for the actual post you wish to schedule in advance or create a new post.

WordPress Schedule Prompt

  • Towards the top right of your dashboard, you will notice the Publish settings, within there you will find the “Schedule For:” option.
  • Click on the blue “Edit” text adjacent to “Publish immediately” and simply set the month, date, year and time you want your post to be published and become live content. When you are setting the time, you will need to keep in mind that WordPress uses a 24 hour clock, there 2.30pm will actually become 14.30pm. Getting that wrong might be fundamental to your timing by 12 hours.
  • Once your time and date is set, Click the gray “OK” button.
  • What was the “Publish immediately” text will now change to “Schedule” with whatever date and time you have chosen displayed at the “Schedule For:” section.
  • Once you are happy with your settings, just, click the blue “Schedule” button (previously “Publish”). Your post has now been placed withing the Schedule database and will be launched at the time and date you set.

  • Wordpres Bullet PointSetting Your Post and Page URL’s
We all know how great WordPress is a simply creating URL’s relevant to the title of your page/post title. However there are times when you just need to tweak that URL a little to suit your needs a little better.

  • From within the WordPress control panel, navigate your way to the Edit screen for the post or page you wish to edit.
  • Below the title, you will notice the button titled “Edit” button next to the post/page permalink.
  • The URL text within the box will become highlighted ready for you to alter to suit your needs. Before making your changes, you will notice that each word is separated by the – symbol, it is important that your changes reflect this rule and are also separated in the same way.
  • Finally click the “Ok” button. This will update the URL and display the new URL you have set, within the dashboard
  • In order for WordPress to actually see the changes and apply those changes to the page/post URL, you will actually need to confirm the change by clicking the “Publish” or “Update” button, within the Publish panel.
  • WordPress Permalink Edit Options

Wordpres Bullet PointWordPress Text editor Shortcuts and Tips
Now anybody who knows me, knows that a I am old school with my raw code preferences over text WYSIWYG editors, therefore I have had to ask my staff to compile this little list of hints and tricks for you.

WordPress has a great little text editor built into it, most people stick with the “Visual” option rather then the “Text” viewer. This sections covers just that the “Visual” editor. At the end of this tip is going to be a clue that will also enable you to increase the power of the WordPress basic editor.
Why not try out the tips below to help speed up your workflow and eliminate many common spelling mistakes and website design issues.

    Spell-checking In WordPress
Perhaps one of most powerful, yet least used function within the WordPress editor has to simply be the spell check option. This is a simple step that many people miss. So many WordPress users think that it is all about the post and content, but before they publish they forget to do a spell check, yet it is so simple and only takes a few seconds to do. Once you have completed your post or page content, (regardless of if you spell check visually as you go along), just click the “ABC” button above your content. You will then be taken on a whistle stop tour of post/page picking out any words that WordPress is unable to recognize and suggestions will be made to correct the mistake/s.

    Remove Formatting from Copied Text
Now we have all been there and we have all done this and found the following issue. Now personally I only copy and paste from MS Notepad, less chance of this happening. But should you find when you copy text from Microsoft Word or any other word processing package, that the text still just does not look quite right. Perhaps it is is slightly offline or the indents have been carried through in the paste function. Well don’t panic, WordPress even has a option to remove the hidden formatting.

  • Above your text will be the “Show/Hide Kitchen Sink” (not an easy button to spot), the button illustrates boxes or perhaps even tables with squares and rectangles. Click it to display the second row of buttons/options. If you still can not find it try pressing Ctrl+Shift+Z.
  • Select and highlight the text or section that does not appear correctly to you.
  • From the second set of options that appeared, just click on the “Remove Formatting” button. The button that resembles a white eraser that turns pink when you mouse over it.
  • WordPress Sink Button

  • Old Fashioned Carriage Return

The ever illusive single line break in WordPress can be fun and games to work out, especially when you are using custom themes. You should note here that there is a difference between a single line break and a paragraph break. A single line break simply moves your cursor down to the next line, therefore keeping your paragraph in one piece. However the paragraph break creates a new paragraph with a gap between the new and previous paragraph. In order to create a single line break, instead of just pressing the return key, actually hold down the shift key ad then press return. To do that, just hold the Shift key and hit Return. That’s it. When you want to add a paragraph break, just press the return key. No more special codes or none breaking spaces to be inserted to move your text around.

  • Use WordPress Keyboard Shortcuts

Shortcut keys are a fantastic way to save time, especially for those who are Cash rich, Time poor. We all know the basic Ctrl+c and Ctrl+V for our copy and paste functions. But what about all the rest, there are so many ways in which you could save time by simply learning these little keyboard shortcuts. For a basic list of the popular check out the WordPress image below or if you have a little more time check out the full WordPress post concerning this subject.

Wordpres Bullet PointMedia, Video and Other Media Embedding Made Easy
No matter where we go on the web, we see this question so frequently and perhaps worse still, we see viewers being told they need a special plugin to embed their most basic media types. Well for those who have installed plugins to enable you to add your YouTube, Twitter, Flicker and other media, the simple fact is, most of the time you don’t actually need a plugin to do the embedding for you. WordPress actually already has the function built in for you.
Using a simple YouTube video, we will quickly show you how to achieve your embedding without any special plugin’s.

  • Activate your cursor within the text window, where you want the YouTube video to appear, (you might want to ensure that you have a paragraph break above and below your embed location).
  • In a new browser tab, navigate to the YouTube video you want to embed. On this occasion we are going to use one of my hobby videos we made last week of Puppy Lea. Once you have the video on screen, simply copy the page URL into your clipboard. The URL is located at the top of the page in the address bar and will appear something like ours below:

  • Returning back to your WordPress dashboard. Simply paste the URL into your desired location, you should avoid trying to align or play around with the display within WordPress right now as it may cause issues with the embedded object. This is where the magic happens, although in your editor you will only see the URL that you have just added, when you actually view or preview the post, WordPress will have made some changes behind the scenes in order to make it functional content.
  • Click the “Preview” button in the top right within the Publish panel. When you view the preview page, you should now see that WordPress has embedded your video for you. In basic all WordPress has actually done is take your original URL within the post and added some short coding to it in the background. So what you see as:

WordPress and Browsers now see as, (we have disabled this URL with extra spaces).

    [ youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsQw_h8vtJs ]

The final result being, your video embedded as below.

    Wordpres Bullet PointMultiple Authors

Most blogs will have multiple authors within their content. Therefore is it not only fair that the actual author get the recognition for their own content. By default on a standard WordPress setup, as a general rule see’s you are the only authorized author. If you have not set up the author as an authorized other author’s withing the “User” panel, you can quickly and easily modify the Post Author settings.

  • In order to change the Author settings you will need to be within the blog post/page Edit screen.
  • In the top right corner of the Edit screen you should see the “Screen Options” tab.
  • Click the “Screen Options” tab and a new set of options will appear along side it.
  • Add a tick to the Author check box.
  • Screen Options

  • Now within your post/page dashboard you will see a new panel has appeared, normally directly below your content editor
  • Change Author In WordPress

  • Using the drop down menu within “Author” panel, simply select the author that is appropriate for the post. Once you click the “Publish” or “Update” button on the post and it goes live within the blog, the Author will have been changed to your required Author.

  • As always we hope you enjoyed our tips and find some of them useful.

The tool also allows you to track leads and referral traffic from Twitter, so you have full visibility of the ROI of your activity:

Twitter Light Bulb MomentMonitor your new followers

Tweetdeck has a handy option that not many people use or discover, that allows you to monitor your latest followers. You can find this by adding a new column in Tweetdeck and then select ‘Core’. This will bring up an option on the right called ‘New Followers’. Select this and you’ll have a new column on Tweetdeck that only contains tweets from your newest followers. This is an excellent way of building out your community on Twitter and making sure you’re keeeping track of your new followers. It can be easy to stick to the same people on Twitter and not follow your new followers back, but this helps to ensure you can always find valuable new connections :

Twitter Light Bulb MomentShare Screencasts on Twitter

This is a great way to add different content to your Twitter stream. Screenr is an app that allows you to create screencasts instantly, including the option to add an audio commentary. This screencast can then be shared straight into your social networks, including Twitter. The site is very quick and easy to use and I think it offers a great way for companies to share new content with their users, such as showing them a new section of their site for example. It’s also likely to engage your followers a bit more as they might not be used to seeing this kind of content within Twitter.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentTwitter for Android

Tweetcaster is a very cool app available for Android users. The mobile app allows you to create multiple Twitter accounts that can be managed with the same screen, which is great if you run personal and business profiles. The app has lots of nice functionality to make for an easy Twitter mobile experience, including being able to easily navigate to different user profiles and easy integration of complementary services such as shortening urls, sharing photos and videos. Tweetcaster is also available as an app for the iPhone, though it appears to be getting the most positive reviews across the Android platform, with poor image quality seeming to be an issue for the iPhone version.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentPost images from Flickr

Flick to Twitt is a nice app that allows you to instantly share your photo uploads in Flickr, back to Twitter. This is a useful app as there is a correlation between active Flickr users and Twitter users. Though there are plenty of photo sharing services available through Twitter, such as twitpic or Yfrog, Flick to Twitt offers a simple one-click process to tweet your Flickr uploads instantly. You don’t need to create a separate profile, simply add your Twitter and Flickr logins and you can instantly share links to your photos.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentTwitter SEO Tip

I found this interesting SEO experiment using Twitter Lists, that can be easily replicated across any Twitter account. SEO still applies to Twitter profiles in the same way as any other site and this tip shows you how you can use SEO on Twitter lists to help improve your Google ranking for your chosen keyword. By creating a Twitter list that has your chosen keyword in it, such as twitter.com/LaurenFisher/socialmedia you can help your Twitter profile rank for your own name, plus your chosen keyword. Though this will happen naturally as you’re added to Twitter lists, you can help control this by creating your own that contains a keyword you’d like to rank for. When Peter Drew ran the experiment he found the Page Rank steadily improving for the list and despite not promoting it at all, it had a Page Rank of 4 within 2 weeks. Through further optimisation, the term is now appearing in the top 50 results on Google, showing the importance of SEO via different means within Twitter.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentFind deals on Twitter

This Twitter coupon search is a handy tool that allows you to see which deals are currently being shared on Twitter. You can search by keyword or type to see a current Twitter stream of people sharing offers in real-time. What I like about this is that it adds some authority to deals. Though there are plenty of deal aggregator sites, the user experience is often messy, leading to old links or offers that aren’t always legitimate. As this is based on links being shared, there is an element of trust in the results. You can click right next to a result to claim that coupon code.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentBrowse your Twitter friends

This is a very cool site that allows you to easily track connections with other new users and discover new people to follow. To use the app, simply put in your own (or any) Twitter username to bring up your latest connections. You can then click on the avatar for the profiles returned, to instantly see their own latest followers, tracking your connections between the two. By continually clicking and dragging you can build out the connections returned, making it incredibly easy to find new people to follow. Warning: it can get a little addictive.

Twitter: Tips and Tricks For IPhone Users

Twitter - Cool Can I Do That

Twitter: Tips and Tricks For IPhone Users

Twitter Light Bulb MomentTaking Advantage of Advanced Timeline Options
    Twitter Timeline Break On IPhone
By default, the Twitter Iphone app will only display the latest 100 tweets since the last time you checked your account. The break in the Timeline is displayed by the jagged line as show in this image. The tweets below the jagged line are tweets from your previous Twitter log in, but what about those in between we hear you say.
Solution: By tapping the Timeline break Twitter will then load the tweets you have missed out on.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentReturning To The Top Of Your Twitter Timeline

This trick can be a little a finger tricky, but if your good, you will get the hang of it. So your way down the river of your Twitter Timeline and rather than scrolling all the way back to the top, you want to be there instantly.
Solution: Double tap the Home button at the bottom of the IPhone screen.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentView complete conversation thread.
    Twitter Reply Tug Down
Isn’t just so infuriating, your half way through replying to a tweet and there is something in the original tweet that you need to check. But this means you have to go back to the original tweet and start all over again. Well not any more, we even have a solution for that.
Solution: Place your finger in the text of the reply and drag the text area downwards, therefore reveals the original Tweet. Hence allowing you to review the content you needed in order to create your reply.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentCopy and Paste functions within Tweets
    Twitter Iphone Copy and Paste
Since Apple finally allowed Copy and Paste on the IPhone, it is now possible to copy the content of any tweet or users bio text to the IPhone clip board. As always with a clipboard on devices, you are then free to paste the clipboard wherever you chose.
Solution: Lightly hold finger on the text you wish to copy, the copy tab will appear, or if it has not selected all the text you want, you can additionally move the two pins that are displayed at either end of the shaded area. This is a little finger tricky if like me you have dumpy fingers.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentLocating the original URL of a Tweet.
IPhone and Twitter Copy Content Options
Somebody has sent you a tweet and there is perhaps more information attached that you can not see or you simply need the URL to the original to share it out with other in another Media format. For those using Twitter or other Social Media marketing methods, this is a handy little tip to be aware of, should you need it.
Solution: Open the original Tweet from within your Timeline, tap the Share button. From within the new pop up menu, select the Copy Link, (if there is another option more suited to your needs, use it within the pop up menu). This will place a copy of the Tweets original URL directly into your IPhones clipboard ready to be pasted where you actually want to use it. I use this frequently when blogging from the Word Press IPhone app.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentActivating Twitter and IPhone link options.
    Twitter IPhone Copy URL Options
For those of us who use Twitter frequently, we all know how everybody loves to attach various URL types to their Tweets, simply because how much can you say in 140 Characters. So, Twitter have provided us with various options that we can do with these links. Once again simple touch screen technology.
Solution: Using your finger tip, hold the URL for a few seconds and release, this will bring up the new option panel. Select the option you require and away you go. By tapping the URL, this will simply activate the required URL and take to the desired location.

Twitter Light Bulb MomentMark All Direct Messages (DMs) as read
    Mark All As Read
If your running a little short on time, or perhaps you have already viewed the basic content of your DMs on another device and have no need to click each and every one to view the content individually, but you need to remove the notification for how many unread DMs you have.
solution: Open your DMs panel on the IPhone, down in the bottom right corner is what appears to be a check mark, (or as us Brits call it a tick), tap this option to bring up a new menu that includes the option to Mark All As Read.

As always we hope you enjoyed our tips and find some of them useful.
